Preventing Insect Bites without Chemicals
Preventing insect bites doesn't require putting chemicals on your skin.
Most of us enjoy spending time outdoors with friends and family when the weather is pleasant, especially in the summertime. However, warm weather also brings with it the nuisance of biting and stinging insects (particularly mosquitoes, bees, hornets and wasps), which can spoil an otherwise enjoyable outdoor activity. Of course, there are sprays and lotions you can buy that repel insects, but there are also natural, non-chemical methods that help keep the bugs at bay.
Mosquitos
Have you ever noticed how some people are more susceptible to mosquito bites than others? Some of the reasons behind this are genetic and therefore unchangeable, but there are also a few factors you can control in order to help keep the annoying insects away. Firstly, mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide our bodies exude. The more our heart rate is increased, the more carbon dioxide we produce. Therefore, cutting back spicy food, and alcoholic beverages can decrease your chance of becoming a 'mosquito magnet'. Secondly, mosquitoes are attracted to sweat, so keeping your body dry and sweat-free will help prevent attracting them as well. And finally, mosquitoes respond to contrast in daylight so wearing dark-coloured clothing outdoors in the daytime should be avoided.
Bees, Wasps and Hornets
Although painful, bee, wasp and hornet stings are rarely serious unless you have an allergy to them. The most commonly encountered bees – bumblebees and honeybees – are not considered to be aggressive and rarely sting unless stepped on, handled roughly or if they detect a threat to their queen or hive. However, wasps and hornets tend to be more aggressive.
As with mosquitoes, there are certain factors that can help decrease your chances of being bitten by bees, wasps and hornets. Generally, all three of these flying insects act in self-defence, so if one of them flies around you, remain calm and don't swat it away. When walking on lawns, it's best to wear shoes or sandals, as bees hover near small flowers and hornets sometimes build nests in the ground. Also remember that bees are attracted to the sight and smell of flowers, so naturally they love strong colours and scents. When picnicking or eating outdoors, you should avoid sugary foods and drinks, as bees, hornets and wasps gravitate to them. If you are drinking a sweet beverage or eating a piece of fruit, always check that a bee, hornet or wasp hasn't planted itself in or on it first.
So the next time the weather gets warm, don't let pesky insects sabotage your outdoor activities. You can take steps to help prevent insect bites and stings before even leaving the house.
